The explosion, which occurred late Tuesday evening in the village of Majiya, located in Jigawa state, is anticipated to result in a rising death toll as more information comes to light. According to Jigawa police spokesperson Shiisu Lawan Adam, the disaster unfolded when a fuel tanker overturned and spilled fuel into a drainage ditch after the driver lost control of the vehicle. This incident prompted nearby residents to rush and collect the leaking fuel, ultimately leading to a catastrophic explosion.
Nigeria, a country where oil is predominantly transported by road, frequently experiences fuel tanker explosions. Such incidents have a tragic history, with numerous lives lost in the past. For example, in 2020, the country’s road safety agency reported over 1,500 fuel tanker accidents, resulting in more than 500 fatalities. Despite being one of Africa’s leading oil producers, Nigeria still grapples with widespread poverty. This economic hardship is exacerbated by the scarcity and high cost of gasoline, pushing residents to take dangerous risks by collecting fuel from overturned tankers or damaged oil pipelines.
The situation has worsened following the government’s decision to end gasoline subsidies last year, causing gas prices to surge to more than six times their previous levels. This drastic increase has made gasoline even more inaccessible for many Nigerians, driving them to engage in perilous activities in their quest for fuel.
As investigations into the Majiya explosion continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of fuel scarcity and the urgent need for safer fuel transportation and economic policies that address the needs of Nigeria’s impoverished communities.
