Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi disclosed during a media briefing on Monday, October 28, at the City Lodge Hotel,  in OR Tambo International Airport, that a pesticide was responsible for a tragic series of deaths. Toxicology results have unequivocally determined that the cause of death was an Organophosphate, a class of chemicals typically used in agriculture and as pesticides. In this instance, the specific substance identified was Terbufos. Dr. Motsoaledi revealed that all six children died due to Terbufos ingestion.

Over the past several weeks, various chemicals were investigated as potential causes of the deaths, with some found at retail locations. Dr. Motsoaledi explained the critical difference between Carbamates and Organophosphates, highlighting that Organophosphates are more lethal and can cause irreversible damage. Initially, a statement suggested that Carbamates were to blame, based on postmortem observations. However, further toxicology tests confirmed that Organophosphate, not Carbamate, was the actual cause of death.

On Friday, October 25, four individuals were apprehended at Joburg Mall for trading a chemical called Aldicarb, with 1,450 grams of the substance confiscated. Although Aldicarb is categorized under Carbamates, it was not the cause of death in these cases. Nonetheless, it remains illegal to sell due to its dangerous nature. Samples from various spaza shops in Soweto have been sent to the National Health Laboratory Service for analysis, and results are pending to determine if the same Organophosphate found in the deceased children’s bodies was present in these shops.

During the investigation, police received a packet of chips following the death of one of the children. This packet was analyzed, and the results showed no contamination. Dr. Motsoaledi elaborated on the symptoms of Organophosphate toxicity, which include severe diarrhea, vomiting, excessive salivation, involuntary tear flow, and constant urination.

Dr. Motsoaledi’s revelations came amid an ongoing investigation into these tragic deaths, shedding light on the complex and hazardous nature of chemical substances used as pesticides. The Health Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to thoroughly investigate and address the illegal sale and use of hazardous chemicals to prevent further tragedies. He also called for greater public awareness and vigilance regarding the storage and handling of such dangerous substances.

The tragic deaths of these children have underscored the urgent need for stringent regulations and enforcement to ensure community safety. Authorities continue their efforts to trace the source of the Organophosphate and to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. The public is urged to report any suspicious activities related to the sale of hazardous chemicals.
