Category 4 Cyclone Chido Strikes Mozambique, Causes Widespread Damage
On Monday, Pemba, Mozambique, launched a significant cleanup and restoration effort after Cyclone Chido wreaked havoc in the southwestern Indian Ocean over the weekend, particularly on Friday and Saturday. Rated as a category 4 storm by the French weather service, the cyclone unleashed violent winds exceeding 220 kilometers per hour (about 136 miles per hour), causing widespread destruction.
The cyclone first struck Cabo Delgado province, home to approximately 2 million people, inflicting severe damage on numerous homes, schools, and healthcare facilities, many of which were partially or completely destroyed. In response, temporary shelters were rapidly established in Pemba for those displaced, while many residents began the arduous task of repairing their heavily damaged homes.
A UNICEF representative expressed concerns that many communities might be cut off from essential services such as education and healthcare for an extended period, potentially lasting weeks. Local authorities also warned of a significant risk of landslides post-storm, posing additional dangers to residents.
The cyclone season in the southwestern Indian Ocean typically spans from December to March, and southern Africa has been grappling with a series of powerful storms in recent years. For instance, Cyclone Idai in 2019 resulted in over 1,300 deaths, mainly affecting Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. Last year, Cyclone Freddy caused over 1,000 fatalities across several countries in the region. These natural disasters not only threaten lives but also pose risks of flooding and landslides, with stagnant waters facilitating the rapid spread of waterborne diseases like cholera and mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue fever and malaria.
Cyclone Chido also brought widespread devastation to Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, resulting in numerous deaths as it advanced toward the eastern coast of Africa. The Comoros Islands, located just north of Mayotte, were significantly impacted by the cyclone, prompting officials to issue the highest alert level in certain areas due to the imminent threats.
As the cyclone progressed inland, regions of Malawi and Zimbabwe braced for its potential impact. Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs issued alerts about anticipated flooding and advised residents in at-risk areas to move to higher ground. Similarly, authorities in Zimbabwe recommended that some individuals prepare for possible evacuation to ensure their safety.
Research indicates that the frequency and intensity of cyclones and other extreme weather events are being exacerbated by the ongoing effects of climate change. Unfortunately, poorer countries in southern Africa, which contribute minimally to this global issue, are at the forefront of severe humanitarian crises, dealing with the far-reaching consequences of these increasingly violent storms.
