The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has officially unveiled the trailer for the highly anticipated middleweight title rematch between reigning champion Dricus du Plessis and challenger Sean Strickland. The bout is scheduled to headline UFC 312 in Australia next month, at 05:00 CAT on the 9th of February 2025.
Du Plessis first claimed the middleweight crown with a contentious split-decision victory over Strickland at UFC 297 in Canada, making history as the first South African to capture a UFC title. However, the decision sparked debate among fans, fighters, and officials alike, with many—including UFC President Dana White—believing Strickland had done enough to win.
“I had it 2-2 going into the last round, and I thought Strickland won the last round. Guys who were sitting at the same table had it the other way. It was a close fight,” White said in the aftermath of the bout.
Despite the controversy, Du Plessis stood firm in his belief that the judges made the right call. The South African champion, known as “Stillknocks,” has since reinforced his dominance in the division by successfully defending his title against former champion Israel Adesanya. Du Plessis delivered a stunning fourth-round submission after landing devastating strikes, silencing critics and solidifying his status as one of the best in the division.
Strickland, however, has never wavered in his belief that he was robbed of victory in their first encounter. He now has the opportunity to reclaim what he feels is rightfully his when the two meet again in the Octagon.
Du Plessis, for his part, has vowed to make a definitive statement in the rematch. “This time they won’t call it a robbery; they’ll call it attempted murder,” he declared.
Strickland, equally determined, has promised to leave no doubt about the outcome as he looks to dethrone the South African champion.
The UFC 312 rematch promises to be a thrilling contest, with both fighters hungry to cement their legacies. Fans can expect fireworks when these two rivals clash once more in what is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year.
