The South African National Parks (SANParks) is mourning the loss of a tourist who was tragically killed by an elephant in Kruger National Park this past weekend. The incident occurred near the Malelane Gate when the individual exited their vehicle, violating park rules and putting themselves in harm’s way.

SANParks extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of interacting with wildlife and the critical importance of adhering to park regulations.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of staying inside your vehicle at all times while in the park,” said  SANParks Spokesperson. “These animals are wild and unpredictable. Exiting your vehicle puts you and the animals at risk.”

SANParks urges all visitors to familiarize themselves with the park’s safety guidelines and to exercise caution during their visit. Key safety reminders include:

  • Remain inside your vehicle at all times, except in designated areas.
  • Maintain a safe distance from all wildlife.
  • Never approach or attempt to feed any animals.
  • Follow the instructions of park officials.

SANParks is investigating the incident and will release further details as they become available. The public and those who have witnessed the incident are urged not to share any footage or images of the incident, as it is a sensitive matter for the family in mourning. The park remains open, but visitors are urged to be extra vigilant and to report any concerning animal behavior to park authorities immediately.
