Commuters relying on the Gautrain between Park Station and Rosebank can breathe a sigh of relief as services have fully resumed following a week of disruption. The Gautrain confirmed on Monday morning that normal operations have been restored after extensive repairs were completed.

According to reports, the borehole created by the unauthorised drilling caused a critical breach, allowing elements to penetrate the tunnel. Gautrain’s dedicated engineering teams worked tirelessly to address the issue, patching the breach, filling the hole, and conducting thorough safety checks to ensure the tunnel was secure for passenger travel.

“We wish to use this opportunity to thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this time and to thank our technical teams for the hard work that they have done to ensure that repair work could be done as speedily as possible,” said Gautrain spokesperson Kesagee Nayager.

The swift restoration of services highlights the efficiency and dedication of the Gautrain’s technical teams in resolving complex infrastructure issues. However, the incident has raised serious concerns about adherence to regulations concerning construction near critical transport infrastructure.

Gautrain CEO Tshepo Kgobe has made it clear that the company is preparing to take legal action against the responsible property owner. The unauthorised drilling constitutes a clear violation of the Gauteng Transport Infrastructure Act, which strictly regulates construction activities in proximity to transport infrastructure to prevent such disruptions.

The legal action underscores the Gautrain’s commitment to protecting its infrastructure and ensuring the safety and reliability of its services. It also serves as a strong deterrent against future violations that could potentially compromise the integrity of the transport system.

The return to normal service between Park Station and Rosebank marks the end of a challenging period for Gautrain commuters. However, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations and respecting the integrity of vital infrastructure. As the Gautrain prepares to pursue legal action, it sends a clear message that unauthorised activities that endanger public transport will not be tolerated.
