Due to ongoing rain, the eagerly awaited Champions Trophy match between South Africa and Australia, the two-time champions, was called off on Tuesday, resulting in no play throughout the day. The pitch at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium remained covered as a constant drizzle persisted in the region. Umpires officially canceled the match shortly after 5 p.m. local time, leading to fan disappointment.
As both teams head into their final Group B matches, they remain undefeated, each having accumulated three points from their previous games. Australia’s next match will be against Afghanistan in Lahore on Friday, while South Africa is set to play against England in Karachi on Saturday, with both matches being critical for advancing to the semifinals.
Both South Africa and Australia began their tournament campaigns impressively, each exceeding the 300-run mark against their respective opponents. Australia, despite missing three key fast bowlers due to injuries, demonstrated their batting strength by successfully chasing a record target of 352 runs, highlighted by a remarkable century from Josh Inglis during their match against England in Lahore. In contrast, South Africa started their campaign by comfortably defeating Afghanistan by 107 runs, with Ryan Rickelton playing a key role by scoring his first ODI century, helping his team achieve a formidable total of 315 for 6.
In Group A, New Zealand and India have both secured their spots in the semifinals, having won their matches against Pakistan and Afghanistan. Looking ahead, Wednesday is set to be significant, as England is scheduled to face Afghanistan in a must-win game for both teams, highlighting the intensely competitive nature and high stakes of this year’s Champions Trophy.
