The City of Johannesburg’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Kenny Kunene, has initiated the deployment of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) to reinforce law and order in Johannesburg and Soweto. This strategic move aims to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents amid ongoing disruptions.
Patriotic Alliance deputy president and MMC for Transport, Kenny Kunene, has attributed the ongoing disruptions to a group of individuals reportedly affiliated with the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP). According to Kunene, these individuals are staging protests to demand employment opportunities, prompting swift intervention by law enforcement to maintain order and protect public safety.
MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela firmly refuted claims that members of his party were responsible for obstructing individuals from working. He emphasised that the allegations were unfounded and did not reflect the party’s principles or actions.
Kunene reaffirmed the City of Johannesburg’s unwavering commitment to maintaining order and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery. He stressed that any attempts to disrupt operations would not be tolerated and emphasised that all employment processes would be conducted through the appropriate legal channels.
“They expect to be handpicked and granted jobs within the City of Johannesburg, but that will not happen,” Kunene asserted. “We are committed to upholding the legal processes and adhering strictly to government regulations in all employment matters.”
In response to the situation, Kunene has deployed JMPD officers to Region D to safeguard workers and ensure they can perform their duties without interference. This strategic intervention aims to maintain order and prevent any disruptions to essential services.
