Witnesses Share Insights into Kelly Smith’s Life and the Night of Joshlin’s Disappearance

Eyewitnesses have described Kelly Smith as a devoted and caring mother to her children as the Western Cape High Court in Saldanha delves into the second week of the trial surrounding the mysterious disappearance of her daughter, Joshlin Smith.
Testimonies included accounts from a seasoned detective affiliated with the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, a neighbor familiar with Kelly’s parenting approach, and Natasha Andrews, a long-standing friend who once considered adopting Joshlin.
Kelly Smith stands accused of serious crimes, such as kidnapping and human trafficking, along with her boyfriend, Jacquin Appollis, and their associate, Steveno van Rhyn. During the trial, Kelly displayed visible emotion, particularly shedding tears when a witness portrayed her as a loving parent.
Carlin Zeegers, who employed Kelly part-time as a domestic worker, spoke warmly of Kelly’s character. Zeegers recalled how Kelly often turned to her for support during tough times, emphasizing the mutual trust between them. “I would often assist Kelly by giving her groceries and paying her for her work at my home,” Zeegers stated. “She has very lovable children, and despite the hardships she faced, she always aimed to be a good mother. I understood her struggles because I am a mother too. While I wish I could provide more information about what happened to Joshlin, my priority was to support her during these challenging times.”
Natasha Andrews, a close friend for nearly 20 years and someone who believed she could provide a more stable environment for Joshlin, also testified. She highlighted Kelly’s commitment to her children, pointing out the sacrifices she often made. “On the night Joshlin disappeared, Kelly came to my house in a panic searching for her daughter,” Andrews remembered. “She returned in the early morning hours of February 20th, just before 1 a.m., to retrieve a photo of Joshlin. I distinctly recall the evening of February 19th because there was load shedding from 10 p.m. until around midnight, which made it even tougher for her to locate her child during that period.”
A witness whose identity remains undisclosed for safety reasons provided critical insights into the desperate search that took place the night Joshlin vanished. This individual recounted accompanying Kelly in her vehicle as they scoured the area for the child, noting that Kelly was weeping inconsolably during the drive to Diazville, where Andrews lived. Upon returning to Middelpos to continue the search, Kelly displayed remarkable composure, which spoke to her strength amid the crisis.
As the trial unfolds, the diverse witness accounts seek to shed light on Kelly Smith’s personality, the circumstances of her daughter’s disappearance, and the intricate aspects of the case.
