Sekhukhune United is poised to embark on a new era under the leadership of seasoned coach Eric Tinkler, who takes the helm on Wednesday night in a crucial Betway Premiership clash against Marumo Gallants. The highly anticipated match marks Tinkler’s debut for the Limpopo-based outfit, following a whirlwind period of change at the club.
The 2024/25 Betway Premiership season has been a rollercoaster ride, marked by both thrilling on-field action and significant off-field shifts. A wave of technical staff changes has swept through the league, reflecting the intense pressure to deliver results. For Sekhukhune United, this change came in a particularly surprising manner.
Just days before their pivotal Nedbank Cup quarter-final showdown with Mamelodi Sundowns, the club made the bold decision to part ways with head coach Lehlohonolo Seema. This move sent shockwaves through the league, as Seema had guided Babina Noko to an impressive fourth-place position in the Premiership, with a strong chance of securing a coveted top-four finish. A string of impressive performances had solidified their position as a formidable force.
However, the club’s hierarchy opted for a new direction, bringing in the experienced Eric Tinkler. The former Cape Town City mentor, known for his tactical acumen and ability to extract the best from his players, steps into the hot seat, aiming to build upon the foundation laid by Seema. He will be supported by former AmaZulu defender Mark van Heerden, who joins the technical team, while Paulus Masehe remains from Seema’s staff, ensuring continuity.
Tinkler’s appointment comes just months after his departure from Cape Town City, where a series of disappointing results had placed the club in a precarious position. Despite leading City to a commendable fourth-place finish in the 2022/23 season, and a strong fifth place finish the following season, competing against teams with larger budgets, he was ultimately replaced by Muhsin Ertugral.
Now, Tinkler finds himself at Sekhukhune United, tasked with guiding the team through a critical phase of the season. His immediate challenge is the clash against Marumo Gallants, a match that will set the tone for his tenure. With the team already performing strongly, Tinkler’s arrival is expected to bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy.
The Sekhukhune faithful will be eager to see how Tinkler’s tactical approach translates onto the pitch, as they look to solidify their position near the top of the Betway Premiership table. The coming weeks will be crucial for Babina Noko, as they aim to capitalize on their strong start and forge a successful new chapter under Eric Tinkler’s leadership.
