A devastating bus accident in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday morning has resulted in the tragic loss of 16 lives and left dozens more injured, casting a dark shadow over the region. The incident, which occurred on a busy road near Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, involved a bus carrying over 50 commuters to work.
While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, preliminary findings from the RTMC suggest that the vehicle swerved, rolled, and came to a stop facing its original direction of travel. RTMC spokesman Simon Zwane provided this initial assessment, but a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the precise sequence of events.
“We are lost for words. This is a disaster,” expressed Andile Mngwevu, an Ekurhuleni city transport official, reflecting the shock and grief felt across the community. A survivor, speaking to the media, alleged that the bus appeared to be speeding, raising concerns about potential negligence.
This tragic incident underscores the persistent challenge of road safety in South Africa. Despite its sophisticated road infrastructure, the country grapples with a high rate of road fatalities, primarily attributed to speeding, reckless driving, unroadworthy vehicles, and the failure to use seat belts.
The Ekurhuleni crash is the latest in a series of recent road tragedies. Just the day before, four schoolchildren were killed and five others injured in a collision involving two vehicles within the same region. Last week, nine people, including a young child, lost their lives when a bus veered into a ditch in KwaZulu-Natal.
