Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin are coming to an end after an exhilarating week of competitive events and communal celebrations. This year’s Games emphasized not only athletic prowess but also the themes of unity, inclusion, and perseverance. The final medal rounds have been thrilling, with two spectacular closing ceremonies held in the scenic locations of Sestriere and Turin, honoring the athletes and the diverse cultures they represent.
A key highlight of the Games has been the significant progress made by African countries in winter sports, marking an important step in their development. Senegal made its debut with a team of eight athletes, while South Africa impressed with six participants competing in figure skating and short-track speed skating. This foundational experience was essential in their development into ice skaters. I am extremely proud of them for stepping out of their comfort zones, giving their utmost effort, and achieving remarkable success with gold, silver, and bronze medals.”
