The City of Ekurhuleni has strongly denounced an unauthorised demonstration by metro police officers, calling it a violation of protocol. Officials insist that law enforcement must uphold order rather than disrupt it and warn of consequences for those involved.
Ekurhuleni officials have condemned a metro police protest that erupted this morning, labeling it illegal and reckless. They warn that the demonstration not only disrupts the daily commute of thousands but also puts public safety at risk.
A protest over unpaid overtime brought major roads to a standstill on Wednesday morning, causing significant disruptions and frustration for commuters.
City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini expressed deep concern over what he described as an illegal protest, highlighting its severe impact on traffic. He noted that the demonstration had caused massive delays along the R24 Westbound, particularly between the OR Tambo and Electron interchanges, leaving commuters stuck in gridlock.
They outline grievances over salary adjustments, unpaid overtime, and alleged unfair labour practices issues they claim have persisted despite multiple efforts to seek resolution.
