On Tuesday, aid organizations disclosed that at least 54 individuals lost their lives due to a military airstrike that targeted a busy local market in Tora, a village located in Sudan’s western region, deeply affected by the ongoing conflict. The strike took place on Monday and resulted in a devastating fire that caused widespread damage and chaos in the area. Eyewitnesses reported horrifying scenes, with smoke rising from the market and burned bodies adding to the anguish.

In response to allegations, the Sudanese military released a statement refuting claims that civilians were deliberately targeted, asserting that such accusations were “incorrect.” Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah, speaking on behalf of the military, suggested that criticisms often emerge when the army is actively combating hostile forces. Nevertheless, human rights organizations have denounced the strike as a “war crime,” emphasizing its devastating impact on heavily populated civilian areas. Reports indicate that more than half of the casualties were women, while at least 23 others sustained serious injuries.

This airstrike is part of a larger conflict that erupted in April 2023, involving the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence has caused one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally, leading to over 28,000 deaths and displacing millions. In Darfur, the situation remains dire as both factions escalate their military campaigns, showing little concern for civilian welfare. The RSF has accused the SAF of indiscriminate bombings, while the SAF has blamed the RSF for deliberately targeting civilian areas.

Humanitarian agencies continue to highlight the catastrophic impact of the conflict on vulnerable populations. According to UN reports, nearly half of Sudan’s population faces extreme hunger, with over 12.5 million people displaced under precarious conditions. In Darfur, malnutrition levels among children and expectant mothers have worsened significantly, exacerbating the crisis. Violence has severely hindered aid efforts, making relief operations increasingly challenging.

The airstrike in Tora has intensified international scrutiny of Sudan’s escalating crisis. Advocacy groups have called for an independent investigation into the attack, stressing the need for accountability. As the violence continues, the humanitarian situation in Darfur and other affected regions remains critical, putting millions at risk.
