Orlando Pirates’ coach, Jose Riveiro, has taken both supporters and the football community by surprise with his decision to step down at the end of the current season. In a statement released today, Riveiro informed the club’s management of his plans to not renew his contract upon its expiration. He highlighted that this choice was made with the club’s best interests in mind, ensuring smooth operations for the remainder of the season and providing sufficient time for future planning.
Under Riveiro’s guidance this season, the Pirates have delivered an outstanding performance, holding second place in the challenging Betway Premiership standings. With only a handful of games left in the season, they are still contenders for the league title, demonstrating a well-synchronized and capable team. The club has also achieved remarkable feats, advancing to the quarterfinals of the prestigious CAF Champions League, where they face tough opponents, and securing a place in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup. Their determination and skill have delighted fans and stakeholders alike.
Since joining Orlando Pirates in 2022, Riveiro’s tenure has been filled with notable successes. Under his leadership, the team claimed three MTN8 titles, two Nedbank Cup trophies, and consecutive second-place finishes in the Betway Premiership. His influence has been pivotal in instilling a winning spirit and enhancing the team’s performances both locally and internationally.
Expressing gratitude for Riveiro’s contributions, Pirates Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza said, “While we would have liked Jose to extend his stay with us, at the same time, we fully respect his decision. The achievements of the intervening years speak for themselves. The joy that Jose and his support staff have brought to this club will never be forgotten.”
As the club prepares for Riveiro’s departure, they have announced the commencement of their search for a new coach ahead of the 2025/26 season. Meanwhile, Riveiro remains dedicated to concluding the current season with success, with the team still actively competing in three major tournaments: the Betway Premiership, the CAF Champions League, and the Nedbank Cup.
The announcement has left fans and stakeholders reflecting on the future path of the club and the legacy Riveiro will leave behind. While his departure marks the conclusion of an impactful chapter, it also paves the way for new beginnings and opportunities as Orlando Pirates looks toward a promising future.
