KwaZulu-Natal Upgraded to Level 6 Flood Alert as Severe Rainfall Batters Province

The South African Weather Service has upgraded KwaZulu-Natal to a Level 6 severe weather warning as sustained and intense rainfall across the province has raised the risk of dangerous flooding, riverbank overflows, and structural damage to roads and communities in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The upgrade places KwaZulu-Natal at the higher end of the warning scale – a threshold that triggers mandatory advisories to residents in designated risk zones and activates the provincial disaster management response protocol. Authorities have urged communities in vulnerable areas to exercise extreme caution, avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers, and move to higher ground where instructed.
The flooding risk arrives against the backdrop of ongoing infrastructure vulnerability across large portions of the province. Roads and drainage systems damaged by the catastrophic 2022 floods – the worst in provincial memory – have not all been fully rehabilitated. Where post-disaster infrastructure repair has stalled or been delayed by procurement failures or funding constraints, new severe rainfall events encounter weakened ground conditions and compromised drainage capacity.
The immediate humanitarian priority is preventing loss of life. The medium-term priority – which this warning episode should sharpen – is ensuring that provincial and municipal disaster preparedness frameworks are adequately funded, staffed, and operationally ready, and that infrastructure rehabilitation commitments made after 2022 are followed through to completion before the next severe weather cycle escalates.
KwaZulu-Natal residents are urged to monitor official SAWS advisories and act on evacuation instructions from local authorities without delay.
