Kaizer Chiefs announced on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, that they had demoted Arthur Zwane from the position of head coach and appointed former Bafana Bafana mentor Molefi Ntseki as his replacement.

Zwane and Ntseki had been joint head coaches of Chiefs since December 2021, when they were appointed to replace Gavin Hunt. However, the club finished the 2022-23 season in fifth place in the South African Premier Soccer League, their worst finish in over a decade.

In a statement, Chiefs said that they had decided to demote Zwane “after a thorough assessment of the team’s performance”. The statement added that Ntseki had been appointed as head coach “due to his vast experience and knowledge of the game”.

Ntseki, who is 52 years old, has previously coached Bafana Bafana, Free State Stars, and Chippa United. He was also the head coach of the South African Under-23 team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Zwane, who is 48 years old, is a former Chiefs player and is considered to be one of the club’s greatest ever midfielders. He won five league titles with Chiefs and was also part of the team that won the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 2001.

It remains to be seen whether Zwane will remain at Chiefs in his new role as assistant coach. However, he is a popular figure among the club’s fans and it is likely that he will be given another chance to prove himself as a head coach in the future.
