Electoral Commission Exceeds Voter Registration Target

In a significant boost for voter participation in the upcoming 2024 general elections, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has surpassed its target of one million new registrations. The surge in registrations comes amidst concerns over low voter turnout in some parts of the country.
By the close of voting stations on Saturday, the IEC had successfully registered one million new voters across over 23,000 voting stations nationwide. The commission’s online registration portal also witnessed record-breaking activity, with 100,000 people registering on the IEC website on Saturday alone. By early afternoon on Sunday, the number of online registrations had reached 600,000, with 40,000 people opting to register through the online portal.
The IEC acknowledged concerns over some online registrations displaying a “pending” message and assured the public that it is working diligently to resolve these issues.
The commission’s success in exceeding its registration target is a positive sign for the upcoming elections and demonstrates the public’s growing interest in participating in the democratic process.
