The 29th South African Music Awards (SAMAs) were held on November 18, 2023, at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria. The awards celebrated the best of South African music, with Kabza De Small and Ntokozo Mbambo emerging as the big winners of the night.
Kabza De Small took home four awards, including Best Produced Album, Best Amapiano Album, Best Kwaito Album, and Best Duo/Group of the Year alongside DJ Maphorisa. This made him the biggest winner of the night.
Ntokozo Mbambo, a gospel singer, walked away with three trophies: Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best Contemporary Faith Album awards. These wins solidified her position as one of the most popular gospel artists in South Africa.
AKA, who tragically passed away in February 2023, was posthumously awarded the Male Artist of the Year Award and Best Collaboration Award for ‘Lemons (Lemonade)’ featuring Nasty C. His album Mass Country also scooped the Best Engineered Album Award.
Other notable winners included Myztro, who was named Newcomer of the Year for ‘2.0 Nkwari’, Makhadzi, who won the Best Traditional Album Award for African Queen 2.0, and Mörda, who cemented his brand as a solo artist and a true performer, winning in the Best Dance Album and Remix of the Year categories for ‘Ndinovalo’ jointly with Yallunder.
The SAMAs also honored several artists with Lifetime Achievement Awards, including Mandoza (posthumous), Ihhashi Elimhlophe, Gloria Bosman (posthumous), and Pops Mohamed. These awards recognized their outstanding contributions to the South African music industry.
Overall, the 29th SAMAs were a night to celebrate the best of South African music. Kabza De Small and Ntokozo Mbambo were the big winners of the night, but there were many other deserving honorees. The awards showcased the diversity and talent of the South African music scene.
