Former Orlando Pirates player Papi Khomane and Mother killed in car accident

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Former Orlando Pirates defender Papi Khomane and his mother, Rita Khomane, were tragically killed in a car accident on Saturday. The accident occurred as they were traveling to a funeral in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.
Khomane, 49, was a stalwart defender for Pirates during his nine-year stint with the club, making over 150 appearances. He was known for his strong physical presence and leadership qualities, and he captained the team on numerous occasions.
“Orlando Pirates Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing away of former captain Papi Khomane,” the club said in a statement. “Papi was a man of few words, but his presence on the pitch spoke volumes.”
Khomane was also a member of the South African national team, earning nine caps between 1998 and 2000. He was a key player for Bafana Bafana during their bronze medal-winning campaign at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations.
“Khomane was a great defender and a true leader on and off the field,” said former Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba. “He will be sorely missed by the South African football family.”
Khomane’s death is a major loss for South African football. He was a talented player and a respected figure in the game. His passing will be felt deeply by all who knew him.
