South Africa Withdraws Bid to Host 2027 Women’s World Cup

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa has withdrawn its bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, citing concerns about submitting a rushed bid. The South African Football Association (SAFA) announced the decision on Saturday, stating that it would prefer to focus on a more comprehensive bid for the 2031 tournament.
“We felt it was better to present a better-prepared bid for 2031, rather than show a presentation made in haste,” said SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao.
The deadline for submitting bids to FIFA is December 8, 2023. With South Africa’s withdrawal, three bids remain in contention for the 2027 Women’s World Cup:
- A joint bid from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany
- A joint bid from the United States and Mexico
- A bid from Brazil
The host country or countries will be selected at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok in May 2024. The last Women’s World Cup was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2023, with Spain emerging victorious.
