PRETORIA – Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on parole on January 5, 2024, after serving over five years of his 13-and-a-half-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013.
His release has been a highly controversial topic, with some people arguing that he has served enough time for his crime, while others believe that he should have received a longer sentence. The parole board’s decision was based on a number of factors, including Pistorius’s good behavior in prison, his participation in rehabilitation programs, and his remorse for his actions.
It is important to note that Pistorius is still under community supervision and will be subject to certain conditions, such as house arrest and restrictions on his travel. He will also have to continue participating in therapy and counseling.
In the wake of Oscar Pistorius’ release on parole today, Reeva’s mother June Steenkamp released a heart-wrenching statement questioning the concept of justice in the face of such loss. ‘Has there been justice for Reeva? Has Oscar served enough time?’ she asks, her words echoing the anguish of a mother forever robbed of her daughter. No amount of incarceration, she continues, can ever replace Reeva’s vibrant presence, leaving those who remain behind to grapple with a life sentence of absence.
On Wednesday, South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services stated that Oscar will live with his uncle in Pretoria. He will continue to be monitored till the end of his sentencing in 2029.
