Africa is cloaked in a sombre mood as we bid farewell to an icon whose laughter echoed beyond the silver screen, leaving a legacy imprinted in the hearts of many. John Okafor, affectionately known to the world as ‘Mr. Ibu’ (62), passed away on March 2nd at Evercare Hospital in Lagos after suffering a cardiac event.
All across Africa, Mr. Ibu was a household name, revered not just for his comedic genius but for the warmth and unity his presence instilled. It is with a heavy heart that we recount the journey of a man who was much more than an actor; he was a cultural ambassador, a bridge-builder, and a peacemaker.
Born in October 1961, in Enugu State, Nigeria, John Okafor’s ascent to stardom was a testament to his enduring spirit of perseverance. His early life, marked by hardship and the untimely death of his father, shaped a path that would define his career. Despite dropping out of college due to financial constraints, Okafor’s passion for entertainment never waned, leading him from menial jobs to the bright lights of Nollywood.

Perhaps one of the most touching anecdotes is how his performance in Ghana led to the reconciliation of two conflicting tribes, earning him the chieftaincy title ‘Malangula I of Tamale Land’ – the peacemaker.
