IEC Fires Official for Leaking ANC Parliament List

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has confirmed that an official who leaked the African National Congress’ (ANC) Parliament list has been fired. This action was taken after the official failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for her conduct.
According to Sy Mamabolo, the CEO of the IEC, the official’s employment contract has been terminated. Despite efforts to understand the motive behind the leak, Mamabolo stated that they were unable to ascertain it.
The leak, which contained the full ID numbers of ANC members nominated for Parliament, was reported to the IEC by ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa and party secretary-general Fikile Mbalula. Both expressed confidence in the IEC’s ability to handle the matter.
The source of the leak was identified within the commission itself, prompting an investigation. Mamabolo revealed that the leak originated from a specific workstation where reports were generated and stored. Subsequently, the reports were deleted from the workstation.
Although Mamabolo confirmed that the leak was attributed to one person, the investigation is ongoing to ensure no other officials were involved. Despite this incident, Mamabolo emphasized that the credibility of the IEC remains intact.

The IEC reported a record number of 27.7 million registered voters for the upcoming election on May 29th, highlighting the significance of maintaining integrity in the electoral process.
