Water Outage in Johannesburg

Johannesburg residents are currently experiencing water supply disruptions due to an outage at the Eikenhof pump station. The outage, caused by City Power outages on Sunday, 02 March 2024, has affected areas such as Soweto, Randburg, Roodepoort, Joburg South, and Central.
Officials, including Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, City Manager Floyd Brink, and Environment and Infrastructure Services Department MMC Jack Sekwaila, provided an update on the situation at a press briefing in Southdale. They mentioned that efforts are underway to restore water supply, but residents in affected areas may have to wait a few more days for the situation to normalize.
Despite some improvements in certain areas since Wednesday, 06 March 2024, the system still requires more time for full recovery, especially in high-lying areas. City Manager Floyd Brink emphasized the interconnectedness of the water systems, highlighting the need for time and additional resources for stabilization.
To alleviate the situation, thirty-five water tankers have been deployed to service affected communities, and the health department has confirmed that water supply has been restored at most health facilities. Additionally, Joburg Water has approached bulk water supplier Rand Water to pump an additional 100 megalitres of water into the system to support the recovery process.
Amid a heatwave exacerbating the situation, officials are urging residents to use water sparingly to aid in the system’s recovery. Maintenance work is also being undertaken to address water losses and manage wastage.
While efforts are underway to restore normalcy, residents are encouraged to remain patient and cooperate with water conservation measures until the situation is fully resolved.
