In a successful operation concluded on March 16, 2024, the Indian Navy rescued 17 crew members from a Maltese-flagged cargo ship, MV Ruen, that had been hijacked by Somali pirates for three months. The nearly 40-hour operation marked a significant development as it was the first seizure of a commercial vessel by Somali pirates since 2017.

Renewed Threat from Somali Pirates

The hijacking of MV Ruen in December 2023 raised concerns about a resurgence of Somali piracy, a major threat to international maritime security in the early 2010s. International efforts significantly curbed pirate activity in the region, but the recent incident highlights the need for continued vigilance.

Indian Navy Takes Action

Upon learning of the hijacking, the Indian Navy deployed its forces, including warships, drones, and elite marine commandos (MARCOS). The operation involved intercepting the MV Ruen in international waters, approximately 2,600 kilometres off the Indian coast. The pirates initially fired upon the Indian warship, prompting the navy to take decisive action.

A Well-Coordinated Response

The Indian Navy’s response involved a multi-pronged approach. Naval vessels surrounded the MV Ruen, while MARCOS were airdropped using a C-17 aircraft for a precision landing near the hijacked ship. Negotiations for surrender were initiated alongside these tactical manoeuvres. The coordinated effort eventually led to the pirates’ surrender and the safe evacuation of all 17 crew members.

Addressing the Piracy Problem

The Indian Navy’s successful operation serves as a strong message against piracy in the region. The captured pirates are expected to face prosecution in India, marking a shift from previous practices of disarming pirates at sea. This approach could deter future piracy attempts.

India’s Growing Naval Role

The MV Ruen operation further underscores India’s growing role in international maritime security. The deployment of warships in the Red Sea to protect vessels during the recent Israel-Gaza conflict and assistance to merchant ships targeted by Houthi rebels in the Gulf of Aden demonstrate India’s commitment to maintaining a stable maritime environment.

Looking Ahead

While the Indian Navy’s operation effectively ended the MV Ruen hijacking, it highlights the need for continued international cooperation to combat piracy in the long term. Collaborative efforts can help ensure safe passage for commercial vessels and maintain a thriving maritime trade network.
