The Spaniard achieved commendable success in his first season, clinching two trophies and securing a runner-up position in the DStv Premiership behind Mamelodi Sundowns. Encouraged by a strong preseason tour in Spain, where the team remained unbeaten, expectations were high for Pirates to challenge for the league title.
Initially, the team showcased promise, particularly with prolific goal-scoring performances from Zakhele Lepasa. However, when Lepasa’s form declined, the team struggled to maintain momentum, despite clinching the MTN8 title in October.
Throughout the season, injuries, inconsistency, and questionable squad selections have plagued Pirates, hindering their progress. Despite individual players like Relebohile Mofokeng and Patrick Maswanganyi demonstrating consistency, the team has grappled with a lack of finishing prowess, undermining their offensive efforts.
Defensively, Pirates have also struggled to find stability, with their backline failing to inspire confidence even with the likes of Tapelo Xoki and Olisa Ndah anchoring the defense.
As the season progresses, draws against Moroka Swallows and Cape Town Spurs have highlighted Riveiro’s struggles to innovate and revitalize the team’s performance.
With hopes pinned on a resurgence in the second half of the season, Pirates fans await signs of improvement under Riveiro’s leadership, as the team strives to overcome the challenges that have marred their campaign thus far.
