In a stunning display of endurance and athleticism, South Africa’s Gerda Steyn has etched her name into the annals of the Two Oceans Marathon history. She claimed her fifth consecutive title in Cape Town.
Steyn’s victory was not just a triumph but a record-breaking feat. She not only secured the win but also improved upon her own course record.
Covering the grueling 56-kilometer route in a remarkable time of three hours, 26 minutes, and 54 seconds, Steyn sliced nearly three seconds off her previous record, which she set just last year. The awe-inspiring achievement solidifies Steyn’s dominance in this iconic ultramarathon.
Steyn will be rewarded handsomely, pocketing R250,000 for her victory and an additional R250,000 for setting a new course record. The magnitude of her success reverberated across South Africa, with fans and pundits alike celebrating her remarkable accomplishment.
Adding to the podium celebrations, Irvette van Zyl secured second place, demonstrating her own exceptional abilities in the demanding event. Zimbabwean athlete Loveness Madziva also shone brightly, clinching third place amidst fierce competition.
Meanwhile, in the men’s category, another rising star from South Africa, Onalenna Khonkhobe, emerged victorious in only his second attempt at the Two Oceans Marathon. Khonkhobe’s triumph underscores the depth of talent within South Africa’s running community and promises an exciting future for the sport.
His unofficial winning time was three hours, nine minutes and 30 seconds.
Lloyd Bosman was second and defending champion, Givemore Mudzinganyama, was third.
