Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has revealed that his team has successfully overcome a critical obstacle this season. He remarks come in the wake of Orlando Pirates’ impressive victories in the Nedbank Cup, where they dismantled Golden Arrows 7-1 and defeated AmaZulu 4-2.
Speaking to the media after the win over AmaZulu, Riveiro acknowledged the team’s struggle with first-half scoring but credited recent improvements to their performances.
“In recent games, we have finally found a way to get rid of one of the obstacles we faced in the last season and the beginning of this season, which is scoring in the first half,” explained Riveiro. “We are now scoring early in the game, making matches much more open and allowing us to play with greater confidence.”
The Spanish coach highlighted the difference in approach between cup competitions and league matches, emphasizing the urgency and intensity of knockout games.
“In cup tournaments, every game is do-or-die. There’s no room for relaxation. We’ve been able to maintain a high level of performance in these matches, responding well to the challenge,” Riveiro continued.
Despite their success in the Nedbank Cup, Riveiro admitted that Orlando Pirates are unlikely to challenge for the league title this season, acknowledging the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns.
