Barcelona Fined and Ticket Sales Suspended by UEFA for Fans’ Racist Behaviour

UEFA has announced disciplinary actions against FC Barcelona, imposing a €25,000 (R510 142,50) fine and banning the club from selling tickets to their next away European game due to racist behaviour by some of their supporters during the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
The disciplinary measures come after Paris police questioned two individuals following the circulation of social media videos. One showing one fan making monkey noises and another making Nazi salutes at the Parc des Princes stadium.
Barcelona’s loss in the Champions League tie against PSG, with a 6-4 aggregate defeat after a 4-1 loss in the second leg, was overshadowed by the behavior of some of their fans. In its official statement, UEFA stated, “The UEFA Appeals Body has decided to fine FC Barcelona €25,000 (R510 142,50) and ban them from selling tickets to their away supporters for their next UEFA competition match, citing the racist behavior of its supporters.” The ban on ticket sales to away supporters is suspended for a probationary period of one year, starting from the date of the decision.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about racism in football. Spain defender Dani Carvajal recently emphasised that Spain is not racist ahead of a friendly match against Brazil. This was aimed at supporting the fight against racism.
UEFA’s actions against Barcelona underscore the organization’s commitment to combating discriminatory behavior within the sport and ensuring that clubs take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters during matches.
