UPDATE – A nation grieves as the remains of 45 Botswana citizens, tragically killed in a bus crash over Easter weekend, return home. The accident, which occurred on March 28th, claimed the lives of the passengers who were headed for a religious gathering in Moria, South Africa.
The bus, traveling from Botswana, plunged off a bridge near Limpopo. The horrific incident resulted in a fire, leaving many of the victims unidentifiable. It took weeks for authorities to complete the identification process, allowing for the repatriation to finally take place.
An 8-year-old girl miraculously survived the crash and has since been reunited with her family in Botswana. She is the sole survivor of the tragedy.
The remains were transported on military aircraft from Polokwane International Airport in South Africa to Gaborone, Botswana. Officials from both countries were present at the airport for a somber ceremony.
“This is a heartbreaking time for Botswana,” said a spokesperson for the Botswana government. “We offer our deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in this terrible accident.”
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The loss of so many lives, many of whom were likely traveling together for a religious celebration, has deeply affected communities in Botswana.
As the nation mourns, funeral arrangements are underway for the victims. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety on the roads.
