LONDON – England cricket received a significant boost with the return of star fast bowler Jofra Archer. After a year-long absence due to injuries, Archer marked his comeback with a wicket-taking performance for Sussex’s second XI.

Archer’s international career has been hampered by injuries, but his talent remains undeniable. England, looking to defend their T20 World Cup title next month in the United States and the West Indies, have recalled him for both the tournament and the upcoming warm-up series against Pakistan.

The 29-year-old quick bowler used his time away competitively by playing domestic cricket in Barbados. In a recent match for Sussex’s second string, he took the new ball and impressed with figures of 1-11 in six lively overs. He even managed to dismiss Kent’s opener Ekansh Singh with a delivery that rose sharply and found the edge of the bat.

Archer will now join the England squad in Leeds ahead of their first Twenty20 international against Pakistan at Headingley on Wednesday.

England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, expressed his delight at Archer’s return. “It’s a huge encouragement for him to be back and see him ready to play,” Buttler told the Press Association. “Everyone knows what he’s capable of. He’s a proper superstar, but we do have to be smart with him.”

Buttler acknowledged the need for measured expectations. “He’s been out of it for a while now, so we’ll need to look after him and realize that it might take him a little while to be the Jofra of 2019,” he cautioned. “The intensity jump from what he’s doing now to international cricket is significant.”

Despite the need for caution, Archer’s return undoubtedly strengthens England’s T20 World Cup defense. His raw pace and wicket-taking ability will be crucial as they aim to retain their title.
