BRAKPAN, South Africa – A joint operation between the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and Gauteng Traffic Police has thwarted a potential crime spree in the Brakpan area. On Wednesday, May 22nd, officers intercepted a suspicious silver VW Polo with three male occupants on the R23 highway.
According to an EMPD statement, Gauteng Traffic Police officers on patrol spotted the vehicle and, due to its suspicious nature, initiated a U-turn to conduct a traffic stop. They were swiftly joined by EMPD officers, who strategically approached the vehicle and apprehended the occupants.
A thorough search of the car and the suspects yielded a concerning arsenal: an unlicensed Glock 45 pistol with its serial number intact, a replica Glock pellet gun, and a collection of official uniforms and equipment. This included two EMPD reflector jackets, trousers, shirts, caps, and belts, along with a dashboard blue light, traffic police stationery, and flame-resistant overalls with a reflective jacket.
The suspects, two South African men aged 34 and 35, and a 29-year-old foreign national, were unable to provide satisfactory explanations for possessing these items. As a result, the trio was arrested on the scene.
“The collaboration with other law enforcement agencies is commendable,” declared the EMPD in their statement. “This joint effort highlights our commitment to combating crime and bringing lawbreakers to justice.”
The three suspects are currently in custody and are expected to appear before the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court soon. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling potential criminal activities. The swift action by the EMPD and Gauteng Traffic Police has undoubtedly prevented a crime and ensured the safety of the community.
