El-Fasher, Sudan – More than two weeks of intense clashes between Sudan’s military and a paramilitary group have left a trail of devastation in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. International aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported on May 26th that over 100 civilians have been killed in the violence, with a staggering number exceeding 900 wounded. The fighting pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and allied armed groups against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a notorious paramilitary group with a history of human rights abuses. The RSF emerged from groups accused of atrocities during the Darfur conflict that began in 2003.

The recent upsurge in violence is a worrying sign of a deteriorating security situation in Sudan. Tensions between the SAF and RSF have simmered since a power struggle erupted in Khartoum last year. The conflict has now reached El-Fasher, raising fears that the city, once a fragile haven of stability, could be drawn back into the throes of war.

MSF officials on the ground highlighted the immense strain the violence is placing on medical facilities. “This is a sign of the violent intensity of the fighting,” an MSF representative remarked, urging warring parties to prioritize civilian safety.

The international community has been criticized for its muted response to the crisis. Concerns are mounting that the world is turning a blind eye to the suffering unfolding in El-Fasher, with some observers comparing the situation to a forgotten conflict.

With no end to the fighting in sight, the death toll is expected to rise further. The urgent need for a ceasefire and a commitment to protecting civilians is paramount. Only then can a path towards peace and stability be charted for El-Fasher and the wider Darfur region.
