Johannesburg – Ajay Gupta, the eldest of the controversial Gupta brothers, will remain in an Indian prison for the next two weeks after a court hearing on Saturday. Gupta and his brother-in-law, Anil, were arrested on Friday following allegations of threatening an Indian building contractor who recently committed suicide.
The Gupta brothers, who hold South African citizenship, became prominent figures during the administration of former South African president Jacob Zuma. They were accused of wielding undue influence over government contracts and leveraging their close relationship with Zuma for personal gain. While Ajay Gupta is not currently wanted in South Africa, his brothers, Atul and Rajesh, remain on Interpol’s Red Notice, meaning they would face arrest and extradition if found in South Africa.
According to Indian media reports, both Ajay Gupta and Anil appeared in court on Saturday and were remanded in custody for the next two weeks. The allegations of intimidation stem from the suicide of a building contractor, though the details of the case remain unclear.
Anil Gupta has also garnered past attention for hosting a lavish wedding for his daughter at Sun City, a South African resort complex, over a decade ago. The event became infamous after guests reportedly arrived in a private plane that landed at a South African Air Force base without authorization.
Ajay Gupta’s detainment in India adds another chapter to the ongoing saga of the Gupta family, whose business dealings in South Africa continue to be under scrutiny.
