IEC Prepares for Special Votes on May 27th & 28th: Here’s What You Need To Know

As South Africa prepares for the 2024 National and Provincial elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) stands ready to facilitate special votes, ensuring that all eligible citizens can participate in the democratic process. Scheduled for 27th and 28th May, special votes will be conducted both through home visits and at designated voting stations across the country.
Ahead of the 3rd May deadline, a total of 1,668,076 South Africans were approved for special votes. Among them, 624,593 voters will receive home visits from trained election officers, while others will cast their ballots at designated voting stations. The distribution of special vote applications across provinces underscores the nationwide enthusiasm for this general election, with Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape leading in the number of approvals.

Here is what you need to know:
Voters participating in special votes are reminded to carry their identity documents. Ballots will be placed in unmarked envelopes, then sealed in a second envelope with voter details. Voting stations will operate from 9am to 5pm, concurrent with home visits. After voting, double-sealed ballots will be transported to local storage sites for safekeeping until counting on 29th May.

Registered voters are encouraged to verify their voting stations before Election Day using various channels, including the IEC website, SMS, contact center, or the IEC mobile app, downloadable from app stores.
