GABORONE, Botswana – A 30-year-old Botswana woman, Lesedi Molapisi, has been sentenced to death in Bangladesh after being caught with over 3 kilograms of heroin at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Molapisi was arrested in 2022 while arriving on a Qatar Airways flight from South Africa.
Drug trafficking carries the death penalty in Bangladesh. Molapisi appeared in a Dhaka court, where the sentence was handed down.
Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi reacted to the news by vowing to appeal the sentence. He acknowledged his country’s reservations about citizens involved in drug trafficking.
“We will facilitate and provide counseling to the family,” President Masisi said. “We will also offer financial support for the final appeal, which will be led by Amnesty International.”
President Masisi highlighted that Botswana’s own citizens expressed strong views against drug trafficking during a recent constitutional review.
“There are strong sentiments out there about involvement in the drug trade,” he added.
The President made these comments before his departure to the JCK Diamond Show in Las Vegas, where he is expected to meet with world leaders and figures from the diamond industry.
“I leave on a somber note knowing that a Motswana far away is facing hardship,” President Masisi concluded.
The JCK Diamond Show attracts over 17,000 attendees and nearly 2,000 exhibitors from over 130 countries.
