Gauteng Police Make 16 Arrests as Election-Related Tensions Rise

Johannesburg, 28 May 2024 – Gauteng police have confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals in connection with election-related offenses since the announcement of the polling date. With 177 of the over 2,700 voting stations in the province classified as high risk, authorities are on high alert to ensure a smooth and secure voting process.
Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the Gauteng provincial police commissioner, highlighted the issues leading to the arrests. “Since the President [Cyril Ramaphosa] made a determination [proclamation] and clearly indicated [that] we’re going to have elections on May 29, you know for a fact that within the province people removed other political parties’ posters,” said Mthombeni. “Of course, we have made some arrests. Thus far, we have arrested a total of 16 [suspects] for elections-related matters.”
As voting progresses, early results from 131 Voting Districts in Gauteng show some notable trends, though these districts represent just 0.3% of the more than 23,000 nationwide and may not reflect the final outcome.
In Gauteng, the Democratic Alliance (DA) holds a solid early lead, ahead of the Freedom Front Plus (FF-Plus), with the African National Congress (ANC) trailing in third. Nationally, the DA is leading as expected in the Western Cape, where the Patriotic Alliance (PA) is also performing well. The PA shows strong results in the Northern Cape, behind the DA and the ANC.
The ANC dominates the Eastern Cape and Free State, followed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the DA. In KwaZulu-Natal, the new MK party closely follows the ANC, with 230 votes to the ANC’s 240. Although the EFF is not leading in any province, it maintains a strong third place overall nationally.
