Orania, Northern Cape – As South Africa tallies the votes from its seventh democratic election, an unexpected twist has emerged from the predominantly Afrikaner town of Orania. Someone in the town, known for its strong conservative leanings, voted for Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), sparking a flurry of speculation and intrigue on social media.

In the town of about 3,000 people, Orania’s election results revealed that the EFF secured 0.17% of the vote. The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) led with 65.62%, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) at 22.16%, Hope4SA at 6.63%, and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) at 2.97%.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted the anomaly, triggering a wave of reactions as users joked and speculated about the identity of the person who cast the unexpected vote for the EFF. The unusual support for the far-left party in a town established by Afrikaners and known for its separatist ethos has caught many by surprise.

Orania, founded in 1991, has long been a symbol of Afrikaner self-determination. The town boasts its own bank, schools, and technical training facilities, and is working towards energy independence. Last year, Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie visited Orania and praised its self-sufficiency.

“Orania is a town where everyone works. Orania is working on ways to get off the grid. They have their own bank and schools and even a technical school and export to other countries. Our leaders go on fact-finding missions to other countries instead of going to learn right here in Orania,” McKenzie said following his visit.

The lone EFF vote in Orania has become a trending topic, with many tweeps playfully wondering about the motivations behind it and speculating about the voter’s identity. This singular act has added a layer of intrigue to the election results, highlighting the diversity of political opinion even in the most unexpected places.
