City of Tshwane Seeks Power Independence, Announces Plans for Power Stations

Johannesburg, Gauteng – The City of Tshwane is taking a proactive approach to combat energy insecurity caused by load shedding. A two-day summit is currently underway, focusing on strategies to lessen reliance on Eskom’s national grid.
A key aspect of the plan involves establishing two power stations within the city limits. Mayor Cilliers Brink outlined ambitious goals, stating, “We aim to make significant progress in getting these stations operational by next year.”
To achieve this objective, Tshwane is seeking partnerships with independent power producers (IPPs). “We recognize our limitations,” admitted Mayor Brink. “The city lacks the capital and expertise required to run these stations independently. Our focus is on attracting qualified IPPs who can transform these facilities into reliable energy sources.”
The plan extends beyond establishing the power stations themselves. The City of Tshwane also explores the possibility of directly procuring power from IPPs, diversifying its energy portfolio and mitigating dependence on Eskom.
This initiative by Tshwane represents a growing trend amongst South African municipalities seeking greater energy independence in the face of ongoing power outages. The success of the plan will be closely monitored, with potential implications for other cities grappling with similar challenges.
