Multi-Vehicle Crash on N2 Claims Three Lives, Raises Concerns Over State Vehicle Safety

EASTERN CAPE, South Africa – A multi-vehicle collision on the N2 near Kei Cuttings has left four people dead, including a police officer, and cast a shadow over safety on South African roadways.
The tragedy unfolded on June 21st at around 6:50 pm, involving a five-vehicle pileup. According to Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose, an unmarked police vehicle was among those involved, triggering a chain reaction that included a fully loaded minibus taxi, a sedan, and two bakkies. Thankfully, all passengers on the taxi emerged unharmed.
“This incident is deeply saddening,” said Binqose. “We offer our sincerest condolences to the families of the deceased, especially the family of the fallen officer.”
Police spokesperson Col. Priscilla Naidu confirmed the death of a 39-year-old police officer who was on duty and a member of the Provincial Organized Crime Investigation Unit. Three other individuals, aged between 28 and 68, also perished in the crash. Two further victims, aged 59 and 60, sustained serious injuries and are currently hospitalized.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
Adding to the tragedy, authorities are seeking the next of kin for a 28-year-old woman who was traveling from East London to Mthatha. “We urge anyone with information to contact SAPS Kei Bridge or Crime Stop,” pleaded Col.
