MTUBATUBA, South Africa – A major victory has been scored in the fight against cross-border crime in KwaZulu-Natal. Sipho Mhlanga, a 37-year-old vehicle hijacker and smuggler, has been sentenced to 53 years in prison by the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court.

Mhlanga’s conviction comes after a lengthy investigation and follows a similar sentencing last year of his accomplice, Vusi Amos Malwane, who received 55 years behind bars. The duo was found guilty on a combined 10 counts, including murder, aggravated robbery, and kidnapping.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a police spokesperson, hailed the sentence as a significant blow to organized crime in the region. “This lengthy sentence reflects the severity of Mhlanga’s crimes,” Mathe stated. “His syndicate caused immense harm, not only through vehicle theft but also through associated violence.”

The investigation, led by a national task team, resulted in the recovery of a staggering 150 stolen or hijacked vehicles. Notably, 4x4s were the primary target, with 93 recovered, compared to 77 sedans.

“We are particularly pleased to be reuniting these stolen vehicles with their rightful owners,” Mathe continued. “As of now, 135 vehicles have been returned.”

The disruption of Mhlanga’s operation extended beyond stolen cars. Police also confiscated over 70 illegal and unlicensed firearms, including 14 rifles. This haul significantly weakens the firepower of criminal networks in the area.

The combined sentences for Mhlanga and Malwane, totaling over 100 years, send a clear message: South African law enforcement is committed to dismantling cross-border smuggling rings and protecting its citizens. The recovered vehicles and confiscated firearms serve as tangible evidence of the success of this operation. However, authorities acknowledge that the fight against organized crime requires constant vigilance.
