The DHA introduced smart ID cards in 2013, aiming for a gradual phase-out of green ID books. Initial plans targeted completion by 2022, but slow adoption of the new cards has pushed back that timeline.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Green ID Books Are Still Valid: You can continue using your green ID book for identification purposes. There’s currently no official expiry date.
- Phased Out, Not Discontinued: The DHA intends to eventually replace all green ID books with smart ID cards. This offers benefits like enhanced security and digital functionality.
- Delays in Smart ID Card Adoption: The rollout of smart ID cards has been slower than anticipated. As of December 2023, only around half of eligible South Africans have obtained them.
- Challenges for New Citizens: Naturalized citizens currently can only receive green ID books, which some DHA offices no longer print. The DHA is addressing this disparity.
What to Do:
- If your green ID book is valid, you don’t need to rush to get a smart ID card immediately.
- Consider applying for a smart ID card if you want the added security features and convenience.
- Check the DHA website or your local Home Affairs office for updates on the green ID book phase-out and smart ID card application process.
Green ID books remain legal identification in South Africa. While the DHA plans a future switch to smart ID cards entirely, there’s no immediate need to replace your green book unless you prefer the advantages of the newer format. Stay informed by following official DHA channels for updates.
