The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has issued a stern warning that it will withdraw from the provincial unity government if Premier Panyaza Lesufi announces his cabinet without their approval. This conflict arises as Lesufi plans to reveal the members of his executive council, potentially allocating only three portfolios to the DA.
The DA’s reaction stems from reports that Lesufi intends to move forward with the cabinet announcement today, even considering an all-ANC lineup if necessary. The core issue is the distribution of executive posts and ensuring that the portfolios reflect a fair and proportional representation of all parties in the unity government.
The DA, represented by Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga, insists on four portfolios instead of three. They argue that the agreement should mirror the voters’ will and support broader inclusion, aligning with a prior “statement of intent” signed by leaders of both parties.
In their view, the ANC should hold six seats, and the DA should have five, with both parties then adjusting their seats to include other coalition partners like the IFP. The DA accuses the ANC of not signing a draft agreement, making recent discussions unofficial.
On the ANC side, insiders say the original agreement was always to give the DA three portfolios, which was the basis for the election of key provincial positions such as the premier and speaker. Lesufi has reportedly been authorized to announce his executive in accordance with this original agreement, despite the DA’s pushback.
The situation remains tense, with potential impacts on the composition of the provincial legislature’s leadership and committee structures. Both parties were unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
