Residents in Johannesburg face a six-week disruption to their water supply as Rand Water, the city’s water utility company, embarks on a critical infrastructure maintenance project. More than 20 areas are expected to experience water cuts and disruptions beginning on June 24th and lasting until July 29th.

This “extensive maintenance” program, as Rand Water describes it, is crucial for ensuring the long-term quality and integrity of the city’s water infrastructure. By proactively addressing wear and tear, the project aims to extend the lifespan of the system and minimize future disruptions.

The maintenance schedule is staggered, with specific areas experiencing water cuts at designated times. Joburg Water, the entity responsible for water distribution within the city, has released a schedule to help residents anticipate disruptions and prepare accordingly. This includes filling up water tanks and buckets to minimize inconvenience during the maintenance period.

The first areas affected include:

  • Eikenhof
  • Zwartkopjes
  • Daleside

With disruptions beginning on June 24th, residents in these areas are advised to closely monitor updates from Joburg Water to stay informed about the duration and severity of the water cuts.

While the prospect of a six-week water disruption may be daunting, Johannesburg residents are encouraged to cooperate with the maintenance efforts. This vital project will ultimately ensure a more reliable and sustainable water supply for the city in the long run. Joburg Water is likely to provide additional resources and communication channels to keep residents informed and assist them in managing through the disruptions.
