KENYA– In a pivotal address on Wednesday, Kenyan President William Ruto declared his decision not to sign the Finance Bill of 2024, a move triggered by widespread public outcry and violent protests across the country. The bill, which had sparked intense demonstrations, led to the tragic loss of at least six lives and significant property damage.
Addressing the nation via television, President Ruto acknowledged the vehement opposition voiced by Kenyan citizens against the bill. “Having reflected on the continuing conversation regarding the content of the finance bill 2024, and listening keenly to the people of Kenya who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this Finance Bill 2024, I concede, and therefore I will not sign the 2024 finance bill,” Ruto stated solemnly.
He emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the country’s dissatisfaction with the bill’s provisions. “The people have spoken,” Ruto affirmed, noting the bill’s passage had precipitated unrest and the unfortunate loss of lives, as well as damage to property and attacks on constitutional institutions.
Kenya, known for its stability in the region, witnessed escalating protests primarily driven by the youth demographic. The unrest intensified despite the government’s recent efforts to alleviate concerns by scrapping proposed tax hikes, including a contentious 16% value-added tax on bread, as well as levies on motor vehicles, vegetable oil, and mobile money transfers.
Tuesday marked a tragic turn when security forces responded to protesters with tear gas and live ammunition, resulting in fatalities. Expressing condolences to the affected families, President Ruto acknowledged the need for national reconciliation and forward-looking dialogue.
“There is need for us as a nation to pick up from here and go into the future,” Ruto affirmed, announcing plans to engage directly with Kenya’s youth to hear their perspectives and proposals.
The decision not to sign the Finance Bill of 2024 underscores President Ruto’s responsiveness to public sentiment, marking a pivotal moment in Kenya’s democratic process amid ongoing socioeconomic challenges. As the nation navigates these critical junctures, all eyes are now on the next steps in resolving the grievances and charting a path forward for the nation.
