Johannesburg, South Africa – As Itumeleng Khune’s contract with Kaizer Chiefs expired at the end of June, the future of the legendary goalkeeper hangs in the balance. Former teammate Brilliant Khuzwayo has stepped forward to offer his perspective on whether Khune should continue playing or hang up his gloves.

Khuzwayo, who shared the goalkeeping duties with Khune at Amakhosi for six years after joining from AmaZulu FC in 2012, knows Khune’s situation well. Khuzwayo served as the second choice until he departed for Orlando Pirates, where an injury ultimately forced him into early retirement. Now, as Khune contemplates his next move, Khuzwayo offers a unique insight into the decision that lies ahead.

Khune, born in Ventersdorp and beloved by fans, has reportedly been offered a non-playing role by Kaizer Chiefs, leaving his future as a player uncertain. Reflecting on their time together and Khune’s current dilemma, Khuzwayo emphasized the importance of Khune making a personal decision rather than being influenced by external opinions.

Brilliant Khuzwayo Weighs In

“I think it’s all up to him now, feeling his body, what it tells him,” said Khuzwayo. “No one can decide for you when to retire. He’s the one who must actually say, now I’m right. No one can actually tell a player, if he’s not injured, that they’re finished and they must stop playing.”

Khuzwayo’s advice to Khune is to carefully consider his options, acknowledging that the environment outside of Kaizer Chiefs might not offer the same level of support and professionalism that he has grown accustomed to at the club. “If he still feels like he needs to continue, he must continue, but for me, the smartest move that he can actually make is to weigh options because outside of Kaizer Chiefs, it’s not as nice as it is at Kaizer Chiefs. You get everything there; that is a proper professional team. Not many teams get that.”

Khuzwayo highlighted the potential challenges Khune might face if he decides to move to another club, comparing it to a child born with a silver spoon who realizes the difference when they step outside their comfort zone. “There’s a lot that happens that is hidden. But for him, it’s him who can feel his body if it’s right or not to retire. For me, as Brilliant, I will say it must be his choice, not anyone’s choice.”

At 37, Khune must consider not only his physical condition but also his passion for the game and his long-term goals. His illustrious career at Kaizer Chiefs has made him a household name, and the decision to continue playing or transition into a non-playing role will undoubtedly shape his legacy.

As Khune deliberates his next step, the football community watches with bated breath. Whether he chooses to extend his playing career or embrace a new role off the field, Khune’s decision will be a testament to his understanding of his body, his ambitions, and his love for the beautiful game.
