South African winger Keagan Dolly appears set to reignite his career with SuperSport United after his departure from Kaizer Chiefs. The 31-year-old is expected to join Matsatsantsa, as SuperSport United are nicknamed, in the coming days ahead of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.
Dolly’s exit from Kaizer Chiefs follows the expiration of his contract at the end of June. Amakhosi, under the incoming leadership of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, opted not to renew his contract, signaling a new direction for the club.
Dolly’s tenure at Chiefs was marred by injuries, significantly limiting his playing time. Despite his talent, he only managed eight appearances across all competitions in the last season, contributing a single assist. However, his earlier career achievements cannot be overlooked. Prior to joining Chiefs in 2021 on a free transfer, Dolly had a successful spell with French club Montpellier. He also rose to prominence in the South African league with Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) before moving on to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2015. Over three seasons at Chiefs, he managed 67 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists.
SuperSport United’s interest in Dolly stems from their desire for experienced players to bolster their young squad. The Tshwane-based club finished a disappointing seventh in the last season, winning only 11 out of 30 league matches. They are hoping that Dolly’s experience and skillset will be a valuable asset in their pursuit of a stronger showing in the upcoming season.
News of the impending transfer has been met with cautious optimism by fans and analysts. Dolly’s undeniable talent is undeniable, but his recent struggles with injuries raise questions about his fitness and ability to consistently perform at a high level.
Whether Dolly can recapture his past form and contribute to SuperSport United’s ambitions remains to be seen. However, his arrival injects an element of excitement and experience into a young squad, potentially igniting a resurgence in both the player’s career and the club’s fortunes.
