Johannesburg – In a surprising turn of events, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has withdrawn all charges against media personality Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye. Jub Jub, known for hosting the reality show Uyajola 99, was facing serious allegations including three counts of rape, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of assault.

The NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, explained that the decision came after a thorough review process. This included examining the police investigation docket, the prosecutor’s report, and additional information submitted by Jub Jub’s defense team to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“Following a careful review of the available evidence, the office of the DPP determined that there is not a strong enough case to proceed with prosecution,” said Mjonondwane.

The withdrawal of charges comes as a shock to many as the NPA had previously indicated confidence in the case. SowetanLIVE reported in August 2023 that they had a “strong case” against Jub Jub.

This development is likely to spark further discussions around the challenges of prosecuting sexual assault cases in South Africa.
