Carletonville, South Africa – In the wake of a horrific accident that claimed the lives of numerous schoolchildren on Wednesday, South Africa’s new Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, has extended her condolences and support to the bereaved families and staff of Rocklands Primary School in Carletonville.

The tragedy unfolded in the Kokosi-Wedela area, west of Johannesburg. A scholar transport minibus, carrying students to their classes, was struck by a bakkie (pickup truck). The collision caused the minibus to overturn and erupt in flames.

The incident has thrust the safety of scholar transport vehicles, a vital service for many South African families, into sharp focus. According to news reports, one family suffered the unimaginable loss of all four of their children who attended Rocklands Primary.

Minister Gwarube scheduled to meet with the affected families on Friday, 12 July 2024. “The safety of learners, both in school and on their way to and from school, is a paramount concern for my department,” she emphasized. “Scholar transport, along with school infrastructure, is an area I consider particularly important. We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this accident, but let me be clear: ensuring the well-being of our students is a non-negotiable priority. My visit today is intended to convey my department’s unwavering support during this incredibly difficult time.”

Authorities are probing whether the minibus involved in the accident possessed the requisite permits to operate legally as a scholar transport vehicle.

The accident has ignited a wave of grief and calls for more stringent regulations to bolster safety measures for scholar transport vehicles. Minister Gwarube’s visit and her commitment to addressing this issue are seen as a welcome step towards assuaging these anxieties.
